PUC Opens Docket No. 2021-0024 to Review Hawaiian Electric Interconnection Process and Transition Plans for Retirement of Fossil Fuel Power Plants

The Commission will use this docket to transparently review and track the status of current projects, identify near-term interconnection process improvements to facilitate renewable projects under development, and elicit the best solutions to ensure a cost-effective retirement of the AES Plant on Oahu, Kahului Plant on Maui, and other fossil fuel power plants.
Next Steps
By March 5, 2021, Hawaiian Electric will file an update on the current status and timelines for all projects in the community renewables (CBRE) program and those resulting from recent competitive procurements. The update will also include a detailed discussion of action steps Hawaiian Electric is taking to address interconnection delays with current projects under development. Finally, the update will include a Transition Plan for retirement of the AES Power Plant on Oahu.
Interested stakeholders may file comments on Hawaiian Electric’s update by March 25, 2021, referencing Docket No. 2021-0024.
The Commission intends to schedule a status conference for further discussion, after receiving comments from stakeholders. The status conference will be open to the public.
